(More customer reviews)After researching hardware and fasteners for treated wood (like ACQ) I found that Grace Deck Protector tape could be used as a barrier between joist hangers and other metal brackets to keep them from corroding. This tape is about 1/32 in thick and definitely provides a good barrier between the wood and metal hardware. It cuts easily to size and 1 roll is enough for my 400 sqft deck. The asphalt layer is the sticky side that adheres to the wood surface and the outside is plastic. Remember to use hot dipped galvanized screws or stainless steel screws since they will be going through the tape and into the wood. Although I'm using Simpson strong tie brackets with ZMAX coating for treated wood, not all types of brackets are available in ZMAX. Deck Protector tape still allows you to use regular galvanized brackets over ACQ treated lumber, which is nice.

(More customer reviews)I just finished redecking an 18 year old cedar deck. I used the old pressure treated bones which were about 95% in excellent shape (a few soft and rotted spots). The cedar was a disappointment and actually started to rot about five years ago and boards were progressively replaced until the rest of the deck boards seemed to just go all at once.
I opted for IPE, a Brazilian hardwood with the fire rating of concrete and a density far in excess of oak. It has a beautiful tight grain that is literally knotless. When you expose the end grain on IPE, if the ends are not sealed immediately they begin to crack. I found out the hard way that if you cut IPE on a severe angle, you had better end seal several times as the end grain just sucks up any sealant when cut on the bias like this. ANCHORSEAL is a fantastic product to dab generously (as the instructions say apply "to the drip")on the end grain to seal it and minimize cracking. It is non toxic, easy to apply, and for most decks, one quart can will be adequate. I needed almost three cans due to the two octagonal gores on a double level deck of roughly 8' diameter each. So each gore on each deck surface has two end grain surfaces times 8 for a lot of end sealing to do. This is the product to get, do not skimp on using it since the hardwood you bought (any variation of IPE or similar) will have been a very expensive board foot investment. DO NOT USE on deck surfaces as the product makes for very slippery surfaces being paraffin wax based.

(More customer reviews)The BoWrench is the best decking tool I have ever used because its easy to use, and it doesn't mar joists like other ones. As a contractor that builds a couple of decks a year, this has paid for its self many times over. You can achieve proper gap spacing with out digging through the lumber pile for straight boards(if they exist anymore!). I would highly recommend the BoWrench to any deck builder.

A deceptively simple-looking tool, the BoWrench is a boon for both professional deck builders and do-it-yourselfers. The BoWench gives you a fast, one-person way to straighten decking boards. This is great, because decking material--whether redwood, cedar, or another, more exotic rot-resistant wood--is often warped, especially in 14- to 16-foot lengths.
