Ever since Chronicle Books published their Hooked on Hiking: Southern California and companion volume to northern California, publishers of outdoor literature have been putting guide books into "decks" of cards. The format makes sense for those planning long day hikes or short backpack outings. But it makes less sense here. Rick Curtis offers a collection of "tips" on how to plan trips, take care of emergencies as they happen, and develop your hiking skills. It's all pretty valuable advice, but you can find most of the same material in his Backpacker's Field Manuel. I don't see how placing the text in a deck of cards enhances the product.
The format aside, there is some pretty useful material in these cards for beginning hikers. I think the lists Curtis provides of clothes, basic day hike and backpack gear, etc are a little overwrought. You actually can get by on a lot less, but until you have a feel for what you are capable of, it is better to be overprepared than under. The discussion of the relative benefits of internal v. external frame packs is a little dated. You can hardly find an external frame pack at REI anymore. But on the whole, the book offers decent advice. An inexpensive paperback might have been a better format.
