The Hiking Deck: Portable Tips for Your Outdoor Adventures Review

The Hiking Deck: Portable Tips for Your Outdoor Adventures
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ever since Chronicle Books published their Hooked on Hiking: Southern California and companion volume to northern California, publishers of outdoor literature have been putting guide books into "decks" of cards. The format makes sense for those planning long day hikes or short backpack outings. But it makes less sense here. Rick Curtis offers a collection of "tips" on how to plan trips, take care of emergencies as they happen, and develop your hiking skills. It's all pretty valuable advice, but you can find most of the same material in his Backpacker's Field Manuel. I don't see how placing the text in a deck of cards enhances the product.
The format aside, there is some pretty useful material in these cards for beginning hikers. I think the lists Curtis provides of clothes, basic day hike and backpack gear, etc are a little overwrought. You actually can get by on a lot less, but until you have a feel for what you are capable of, it is better to be overprepared than under. The discussion of the relative benefits of internal v. external frame packs is a little dated. You can hardly find an external frame pack at REI anymore. But on the whole, the book offers decent advice. An inexpensive paperback might have been a better format.

The book had good pictures and several good ideas on how to create an advanced deck. It is well written and easy to follow. This book includes multi-level, decks with angles or curves, low profile decks, etc.
However, they assume that you are an advanced deck builder and gloss over many of the basics. They do have a basic deck building book by the same company that they recommend, although I haven't seen it anywhere.

The Feng Shui Deck Review

The Feng Shui Deck
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A friend of mine gave me Olivia Miller's Feng Shui deck when I moved into a new home in Boston. Initially, I was drawn to the suggestions for harmony in each room. The table of contents provided me with an easy reference for each area of my home, and the explanation on every card was clear and concise. Although I have other books describing the principles of Feng Shui, this deck is the one I return to again and again because it is so easy to use.
After a few weeks, I found that I was drawn to the I Ching hexagrams on the cards. I shuffled the deck and placed it on my kitchen windowsill. Each morning I randomly draw a card and spend a few minutes meditating on the hexagram and the question on the card. The constantly changing nature of life is reflected beautifully in the cards, and I head off to work every morning with healthy, peaceful, and joyful energy.

It's a great book. We needed ideas and some inspiration, and that's what we got. Lots of pictures, good tips. No fluff. It steered us away from simply pouring a concrete patio and laying out some lawn chairs. It ran the gamut from drainage, slope and elevation, to materials and costs.

The latest in Home Depot's how-to series, Decks 1-2-3 really delivers the goods! Being the visual learner that I am, I was very impressed with the amount of helpful photos in the book, showing the homeowner how to plan, organize, and carry through the installation of a deck for their home.
Not only do the editors provide the homeowner with simple steps and checklists for the project, but they also provide designer tips and a skill scale to give you an idea of what you're in for before you plunge right in with one of their projects.
Well organized and very well illustrated, this one's already taken its place beside the others on the shelf in my Home Depot library.

GreenSpec Directory, Fourth Edition Review

GreenSpec Directory, Fourth Edition
Average Reviews:

If you are looking for environmentally preferable, or "green" building products and materials, then check the book out. Published by the folks who put out "Environmental Building News," it contains helpful listings for hundreds and hundreds of products.
I really like that they don't accept any advertising or fees from the product manufacturers... makes me feel like I can trust what they have to say.
The information is well organized and presented. The listings are organized by "CSI masterspec" which is a system used by Architects, so it takes some getting used to if you're not an Architect... for example, insulation is under "thermal protection." There is a handy cross-reference index by more common category names of products.
There's also some "specification" language... another aspect that is more useful for architects than the general public. But it gives some good tips on how and why to use these green materials. I have heard that the publisher, BuildingGreen, is coming out with a "homeowner" version soon.

Taunton's Deck & Patio Idea Book Review

Taunton's Deck and Patio Idea Book

This book has some good designs, but not what I was expecting. I am looking to build a new deck (my first), and want ideas... This book had some fancy ideas, but not too many practical ideas... So if you are looking at a book like this, you are most likely going to pay someone else to do the job... There is nothing wrong with that though.... ;)

No longer just a bland square of pressure-treated lumber nailed to the back of the house, decks have taken on new shapes, surfaces, and levels. And patios have evolved from dull slabs of poured concrete to encompass a wide range of forms and materials--from warm brick to chic bluestone to casual gravel. "Taunton's Deck and Patio Idea Book is a photographic exploration of the possibilities for these spaces, and the features that define them, including railings, built-ins, and overhead structures. Hundreds of photos depict the full spectrum of styles and sizes, from the simple wraparound deck, to the curved, multilevel redwood deck with outdoor kitchen; from the small brick patio to an elaborate series of terraced patios with stone walls.

Gardeners Fact File Review

Gardeners Fact File
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book wasn't what I expected. I read the description, and even looked it up on other sites, but I guess I didn't do a good enough job. I wanted a book where I could stash all my tags from the plants I bought and make some notes about when and where I planted things. This book does have that - but it's only 4 pages in the back of each section - by design, you have to use those pages for planning until the last section when you can fill in your actual garden. The rest of the book is your usual garden book with sections on designing your garden, foundation of the garden, features of the garden, creative planting, and planting "practicalities". The print in the book is very small, I'd say that most of what you have to read is in 6 or 8 point font. It has A LOT of information - a paragraph on every topic you can imagine - for example, in the planning section, there are paragraphs on views, climate and aspect, gradients, features, plants, paths, divisions, formal gardens informal gardens, wild gardens, themed gardens, sun, shade, wind, frost, soil, etc., etc. For a beginnger like myself, this just overwhelms me. I have not read the book besides a bit here or there on a page, but it's hard to imagine that there is a lot of depth because of the breadth of the topics covered. Oh, and speaking of topics, there is an index (TG! You'll need one!), but it's only 3.5 pages, so I wonder how detailed it is.
Anyway, this book would be a good primer for someone who is starting from a blank slate and also knows very little about gardens or gardening.

Build Your Own Low-Cost Timber and Beam House Review

Build Your Own Low-Cost Timber and Beam House
Average Reviews:

I am in the process of building my own post and beam home with lumber we are pioneering from our own property.
I've gathered far more than the information contained in this book using great on-line resources and discussion forums on wood milling and my partner and I are both skilled enough to complete significantly better designs and plans than this author.
The book appears to be a self-published. It would have maybe been worth a 99 cent download of an e-book, but hardly worth the nearly $17 when I would have rather spent it on some more prefessional books here on Amazon.
Great if you know nothing about construction and cannot figure out how to use the A9 or Google searches to get the same information. Save your money. Buy a post and beam construction book that has real information and photos in it.

How To Build Your Own Low- Cost Timber and Beam House provides step-by-step directions from finding logs to finishing the house. I built a 1200 square foot house for $22,000, during 1992-5. Chapter 1 tells how I located my land, chose tools, and located the logs. I purchased a small sawmill, which I tell how to use, even how to cut the siding used on the house; also how to lay a foundation and get utilities. Chapter 2: How to construct the sill and floor beams. Chapter 3: How to design the house you want, using my own as illustration, then how to construct the first- story walls using simple equipment, including the hardware I used and methods of raising the wall frames with door and window frames as part of the structure.Chapter 4: How to frame the second story. I present several design options, then describe my experience with the barn style I choose. Here you'll learn how to design and raise the ridgepole, construct the barn style rafters, and set them in place. Chapter 5: How to apply the roof decking and roof. Chapter 6: How to dry in the structure and how I proceeded by laying flooring and installing siding alternately. I describe types of wall sheathing (e.g. blackboard or aluminized) and how to finish the framing for doors and windows. Chapter 7: Details about how to make and apply exterior siding from the log supply using a small sawmill, after a brief description of types of siding options, including how to install the siding for both the first and second stories. Chapter 8: How to finish the interior, including constructing a stairway, installing plumbing and fixtures, installing electrical wiring and fixtures, wall treatments, kitchen cabinets, and floor finishing such as tile. The bookcontains 21 color photos and 30 diagrams. Pb, 132 pp.

At its best, this is a period piece. But for the beginning boat builder it is not one I would recommend. As one who has built a boat and am building a second, there are a number of other titles that deliver a more satisfying and beneficial read. The information though authentic is dated. Browse Woodenboat Magazine's Bookstore site and examine their numerous titles there before purchasing this option. For a title from the same time period, I heartily recommend: How to Build Wooden Boats: With 16 Small-Boat Designs (Paperback)available here at Amazon.

Steel Designers' Manual Review

Steel Designers' Manual
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I own the 1990 edition of this book. It claims its a design manual, but yet I cant find the info i need. any info is usually refered to external sources and papers. It more or less follows the format of "for treatment of such and such a case please refer to this book or that paper" What if I dont have or unable to find or buy those materials? Come on! as a manual, it is supposed to provide me with that information and whatever extra tables or formulae which the code does not have, not tell me to get extra books or papers! I did not pay such a high price to get a signpost for information! If that were the case I might as well have a bookcase FULL of all kinds of specialist books and Engng Papers just to get that particular piece of info here or there etc and most of which I might never use again in my lifetime! It never explained how openings in steel webs should be treated or checked, the treatment of torsion was a short paragraph, the design of vierendeel girders was 2 short paragraphs & not a single formulae or worked example of such things were included.... In the end i was none the wiser. Dont expect BS5950 to provide everything in so much detail. The book is supposed to complement the code. In this respect it had failed in its purpose as a manual.
If you want to see how a manual should be look at Reynold's RC designer's manual. Now THAT is what i call a manual. Graphs of all kinds, extra formulae, tables of all kinds, concise presentation of theory not covered by most texts, worked examples. Every thing you ever wanted to know abt RC design!
