A Trailside Guide: Snowshoeing (Trailside Guides)
Average Reviews:

The best outdoor guides I've ever read. This book targets the recreational snowshoer who might do strenuous day hikes, but doesn't attempt to be a detailed manual for the fanatic spending a week snow camping. IMHO, the book succeeds admirably in meeting the needs of its target audience. It covers all the basics - gear, clothing, the few elements of technique required for snowshoeing, and safety. The prose is very accessible, the pictures add a lot of warmth to the text, and there's even a chapter on snowshoe running. The author captures the feel of the snowshoes rather well and I often found myself nodding my head in agreement with the tips for climbing, descending and traversing that I had to learn by hard experience. I live in California and usually snowshoe in much warmer weather (mid-30s F) than the northeast or midwest, so the clothing suggestions are way too conservative for me - but that's the only fault I could find with the book.

How to Build a Boat Dock Review

How to Build a Boat Dock
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The author wastes no words as he lists all of the factors that influence a boat dock. Several chapters are dedicated to helping the reader understand water level fluctuations, soil conditions and dock anchoring. The hardware section was descriptive and the designs included a chapter on dock assembly. The materials required to build each dock were listed. In all I was satisfied with the presentation of information and the designs that were detailed.

Modern Construction: Handbook (Modern Construction Series) Review

Modern Construction: Handbook (Modern Construction Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have found this book so helpful that it sits immediately adjacent to my copy of Architectural Graphic Standards.
If you follow architectural publications, you will find this handbook catalogs recent noteworthy works that you are familiar with, and many others that you are not. Specifically, this book is organized according to specific building component types (i.e. curtainwall systems, millwork, stairs.) For each of these types, the book offers a color photograph of a built example, and then several blackline details revealing the technical composition required for such an aesthetic effect. The best thing is, the book offers 3+ examples of each component type.
I recommend this book for all practicing architects who are involved in all scales of building types.

The Minimalist Garden Review

The Minimalist Garden
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is a neat collection of photographs which show the several appearances that a minimalist garden could take. Some of them are very well know for anybody who has read a gardening book once at least. Tadao Ando, John Pawson and Claudio Silvestrin among others famous architects had been chosen as well as icons in minimalism concept like Ryoanji Temple in Kyoto. There are few pictures from a wide range of gardens all around the world and a brief explanation of each one. There are some hints of what minimalism is, but it is not a deep and accurate publication about minimalism and the way a garden should be built following minimalist principles. But if you are looking for a book with beautiful and inspiring photographs and very well designed this book is what you need.

Over the course of the twentieth century many of the best garden designers looked to the past for inspiration; at the turn of the millennium, however, a fresh approach to garden design—minimalism—has moved to the forefront. The philosophy of minimalism, rooted simultaneously in classicism and modernism, has had a strong influence on architecture and interior and graphic design, as well as landscape. Minimalist gardens, with their emphasis on clean lines, pure form, and a strong sense of place, are closely related to contemporary architecture and lifestyles. New trends in more relaxed and ecologically aware planting have contributed greatly to the development of such green spaces, and the creative use of trees and hedges to define and control space is often an important design element. In this volume, award-winning garden designer Christopher Bradley-Hole has drawn together a great variety of minimalist gardens from around the world—large and small, urban and rural. The projects are grouped into thematic chapters, including the landscape garden, pools and water gardens, courtyard gardens, and terrace and roof gardens. Among the designers are Vladimir Sitta, John Pawson, Luis Barragán, Seth Stein, Jacques Wirtz, Martha Schwartz, Shodo Suzuki, and Isamu Noguchi. Large color photographs and detailed images show the gardens in context; the text discusses the inspiration behind each garden, the relationship of space and proportions, and the frequent use of unusual materials and imaginative planning. Directories of materials and plants for the minimalist garden are included as well.

D.I.Y.: Design Deck: Cards Review

D.I.Y.: Design Deck: Cards
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Design It Yourself author Ellen Lupton and Alissa Faden have created a fascinating compilation of projects for crafts-oriented individuals to use expressing their design ideas. The cards are printed as a series of 2, 4, and 6-panel color cards, each approximately 5 by 6 inches. Cards come in a box.
Projects are intended to showcase an individual's designs and include books, gifts (like luggage tags and refrigerator magnets), housewares (coasters, wall graphics), invitations, personalized shirts, stickers, and totes. Information is tightly organized; contents are organized in terms of project tools, materials, and instructions.
The first, or introductory, card introduces the tools needed to complete most of the projects--glue, scissors, razor knives, double-sided tape, etc. Online resources for paper manufacturers, vendors of crafts supplies and tools, plus other information sources are also included.
The deck's goal is to inspire readers to "get up off the couch and design your world." The Design Deck represents a great execution of laudable idea. In the hands of the right parent or teacher, this remarkably low-priced product can inspire and launch the careers of many next-generation graphic designers and product designers.

Boatbuilding Down East: How Lobsterboats Are Built Review

Boatbuilding Down East: How Lobsterboats Are Built
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a book I have wanted since I first heard of it. I received it as a gift this Christmas, so the waiting is over, and it is about 75-80% what I expected.
It is highly instructive on the process of building a traditional wooden lobsterboat, written by one of the very people who help define what a lobsterboat is - Royal Lowell. The illustrations and instructions are some of the best I've seen. The guidelines given in the text would be good enough for an experienced boat-builder to construct one of these boats with very little guessing required.
My only reservation in giving this a five-star rating is that the "yacht design" information is lacking in my opinion. I was expecting at least 'some' information from Royal Lowell about how lobsterboats, particularly those designed and built by his family, were designed to do what they do and do it well. In all of the reviews and descriptions, you are led to believe that this book is centered on Lowell's designs, and that design drawings are included. In some respects that is correct - but misleading for someone wanting to know more about how these boats were designed as well as how they were built. Amazon's description reads "Featuring many of Lowell's lobsterboat designs and is truly a builder's guide for traditional lobsterboats. Well illustrated, lines for several boats." There are drawings of 4 boats (or 5, if you count a "cruiser" version of the 4th one) featured at the end of the book. There are "lines" for only one, though - and although it was clearly drawn by Royal Lowell, it is a design-reproduction of a boat that his grandfather Will Frost actually designed. That's great information and I'm glad to have it, but it's not really his design. I don't doubt that all of the illustrations that Lowell did for the book are based on his designs, so thereby his designs are indeed "featured" - but the 4 boats in the back are much less "design" than I was expecting based on the description. The "lines for several boats" statement is the one I find most misleading. Saying "Lines" implies sheer lines, keel lines, waterlines, buttocks, sections, diagonals, etc. - all the things associated with design. But for the boats featured, what is given are outboard profiles, arrangement plans, and construction plans - with a midship section for 3 of the 4. Clearly not lines, but designs no doubt.
So, although I am very happy with this book, and will treasure it, I feel that the descriptions and reviews should reflect that it is a "building" book, not a "design" book. In the Wooden Boat Store's defense (which I have no doubt is the source for this book), they have it included in their building section, not their design section. And they clearly mention that the dust jacket (with the wonderful painting of the boat high on a wave) is no longer included - so the book is plain denim-blue canvas with the title only on the spine. But, their description is the same as Amazon's, so that's likely where Amazon's came from. If you are considering this book, and you should, consider mostly that the part of the description saying "...is truly a builder's guide for traditional lobsterboats. Well illustrated..." is the most accurate part of the description and then you will fully get what you are expecting.

Kriegsmarine U-boats 1939-45 (1) (New Vanguard) (v. 1) Review

Kriegsmarine U-boats 1939-45 (1) (New Vanguard) (v. 1)
Average Reviews:

If you want to learn about U-Boats pass this one up. What you end up with is a cleverly marketed first half of a small booklet. I was enfuriated to see that I have to buy the second volume just to end up with what is a 100 plus page pamphlet on U-Boats for twenty five dollars all told after purchase.
Osprey does well in presenting targeted overviews of certain subjects but they are starting to carry this marketing strategy to an extreme. I have seen enough of this now with other Osprey titles that I have this advice for would be book buyers: If it says NEW VANGUARD somewhere on the cover...pass on it. If its an "Osprey" publication, get a good look at it before you buy and make sure its not part of one of their "series" ploys first.

Real Estate Home Inspection: Mastering the Profession Review

Real Estate Home Inspection: Mastering the Profession
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When one pays for a book, one expects to receive something a little special. The subject matter is, of course, limited to a small target population, resulting in limited distribution and higher unit cost. Having said that, no matter what the cost, one does not expect to encounter typos or incomplete sentences and topics, as found in this book. On page 75, for example, the last sentence in the left column reads "Wall sectons are" and that's the end of the thought, the topic ends there! The new topic, Platform Framing, begins in the right colum of that same page. Also, some of the illustrations are not completely clean and clear, like they've been copied on the copy machine too many times. I almost expect a hardbound edition with color photos or illustrations. What justifies this book costing more than most of its competition? Yes, I'm happy to add it to my library. No, I don't consider it a good value. And, once again, typos and omissions are unforgiveable. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Book of Plans for Small Gardens Review

Book of Plans for Small Gardens

This lovely hardcover is lavishly illustrated with renderings and photographs of small garden landscape designs created by landscaping professionals. It's a book that could provide ample food for thought for just about any small garden. I find myself leafing through it over and over, despite the fact that I've read nearly every page in detail. It's well and thoughtfully laid out. There is little detail about cultivars, materials, equipment or planting practices. This is a book for those who are already well versed in choosing the right plants for the right place. It would be a good handbook for someone who is running their own landscaping business, but could be equally helpful for someone who wishes only to improve their own small garden. I'm glad I found it. It will most definitely be used in the development of my own landscape.

Build Smarter With Alternative Materials Review

Build Smarter With Alternative Materials

This may have been a fine book years ago, but now it is just out of date. Newer, better material have replaced some of the concept in this book and I tried calling the company that does hatch roofs to find out they no longer exist. Some web site links do not work and in the end, I used none of the techniques or materials mentioned. So, for me, it was a waste of money.
If the authors would update the book, I think it could be useful but as it is written, it is old info.

New building products are coming out almost every week. Some of them may become new standards, as sheetrock replaced lath and plaster some years ago. Others are little more than a gimmick. To write this manual, the author researched hundreds of products that have come on the market in recent years. The ones he describes in this book will do the job better, creating a superior, longer-lasting finished product, and in many cases also save you time and money. Some are made with recycled products a good selling point with many customers. But most of all, they give you choices, so you can give your customers choices. In this book, you'll find materials for almost all areas of constructing a house, from the ground up. For each product described, you'll learn where you can get it, where to use it, what benefits it provides, any disadvantages, and how to install it -- including tips from the author. And to help you price your jobs, each description ends with manhours for both the first time you install it, and after you've done it a few times.

I picked up this book because my Mom's backyard needs an update. Lots of sloping and dips in her yard. Trying to decide out of pavers, flagstone, concrete or wood decking was a challenge because all of them can be beautiful. This book had lots of great pictures with clear details. There was some helpful information, but a lot of it was basic and common sense stuff. It's a great book for helping you find what you do and don't like. Of course the challenge is that it can also give you ideas that may complicate the decision-making process. It would have been helpful if names of designers and location were used or in the Furnishings and Accessories section having a web link to the supplier. Unfortunately, none of the information of where to buy or who designed the decks or patios was provided. So think of this as a great photo book for ideas.

911: The Book of Help (Authors Respond to the Tragedy) Review

911: The Book of Help (Authors Respond to the Tragedy)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"USE WORDS" author Naomi Shihab Nye offers in a new book, published by Cricket Books (the
children's publisher) and Carus Publishing, called _911: The Book of Help_. "USE WORDS. It is the
most helpful thing I have learned in my life. . . Whether we write them down for ourselves or send them into
the air as connective lifelines between us, they help us live, breathe, and see."
Walter Dean Myers--five time winner of the Coretta Scott King Award--tells it differently, shortly after 9/11
from London, as what was thought to be another terrorist attack brought down a plane in Queens: "I watched
as a group of young men stood in front of an appliance store and watched the events on a television in the
window. They were cheering the destruction. . . I watched one young man in particular: he was slapping the
backs of his fellow watchers and making a big show of his glee at the image of the burning plane. . . ."
Myers son, he writes, was to leave from California to the Middle East as an Air Force chaplain. In those
moments watching the young man, a young man not so unlike his own son--the chaplain ("[t]hey both
profess beliefs in a loving, merciful God"), the author nevertheless embraces a stunning reality: he has, in
that moment, an *enemy*. . . if only in the instinct which seeks to protect his son.
Sonya Sones' tender and gripping poem "Voices" is one of the most moving, and dramatic, pieces in this
book. Simple in its three lined stanza form and in its utterance, it recalls the many struggling faces of horror
and tragedy: "I am the one/ who'd traveled from Kansas/ to see the view from the top.//. . . I am the one/
who fought with my wife/ before I came to work// I am the one/ who'd just found out/ my cancer was in
remission.//. . . I am the one/ who looked up from my desk/and first saw the plane bearing down.//. . . I am
the one/ who held my daughter close to me/and prayed.//. . . We are the ones/who were blown/through the
glass//. . . We are the ones/who can't/rest in peace.//. . . ."
Author David Paterson dropped what he was doing, after he could not stand it any longer, and went down to
Ground Zero to see if he could help. At one point he finds in the pile "the miniature painting of a
three-masted ship. . . the tiny brush strokes. . . impressive, creating both waves breaking against the ship and
the gentle clouds pushing it on its way." There was, also, a torn area "from shrapnel". He could read the
name of the artist--it belonged to a woman who had retired from an office in One World Trade. She awaited
the painting, pulled from the rubble, in Houston.
Kyoko Mori, author of the memoir _The Dream of Water_ and two time ALA Best Books for Young Adults
winner, writes "I had been lucky: I had been sheltered from the war, violence, and hunger that devastated a
great portion of the world. . . [and] even as I grieve. . . I want to welcome the opportunity to belong to the
rest of the world. . . the bond that suffering creates between people past and present, here and there, and all
over the world."
Whether we know another by the name "enemy" or "friend," it is--as Naomi Shihab Nye has requested of
us--a matter of letting our words express our humanity. One cannot really say this is a self-serving directive;
now compels a dialog, an anti-war, an opening into which words explain ourselves--so we may then
embrace.
--Peter Money is a librarian, teacher, poet & writer, & member of PEN New England. *This book recommended for Teen and Adult Collections*
