Green from the Ground Up: Sustainable, Healthy, and Energy-Efficient Home Construction (Builder's Guide) Review

Green from the Ground Up: Sustainable, Healthy, and Energy-Efficient Home Construction (Builder's Guide)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book does a good job at setting up a working definition of "green building" as a decision making process that occurs at each point in the design of a building, with an emphasis on residential construction. The book has a lot of pictures and pop-up bubble sidebars that make each page seem more like a design school presentation poster (that's a good thing). It presents a lot of basic information and principles about each part of a building, from foundations, insulation, windows, framing, flashing, natural building, etc. and how they come together as a "green building system."
If you are an architect or drafter who is looking for a book with technical details and explanations about specific construction methods or materials notes do not buy this book. If you would like to learn about green building science principles as to how they relate with each division in a building then buy this book.

Graphic Guide to Site Construction: Over 325 Details for Builders and Designers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What an excellent little book! As a landscape designer (who provides the aethetic overview for the contractor to install), this book has proven extremely helpful in answering my never-ending questions, "how will ____ be built?" As such, it is invaluable in the design process as well.
Aimed at residential design, every hardscape element I need is explained and illustrated in a professional, thorough, easy-to-understand way.Examples of what's covered: retaining walls, steps, drainage, railings, irrigation, lighting, septic systems, paving systems, deck structures, built-in fireplaces, built-in kitchens, water, pools, spas....etc, etc, etc.
Of the more complicated things (built-in kitchens, swimming pools), the authors kept the details simple, describing the overall concepts, so that a designer can show them, but a skilled contractor would need to fill in. Of the things a do-it-yourselfer can do (e.g. fences, simple paving), there is a more thorough covering.

This book is NOT among the comprehensive construction standards references that must (by necessity of their content) be priced in the $100 to $200 range. This one is focused and kept to-the-point as a quick but thorough reference for all manner of outdoor construction used in residential landscapes.
For landscapers, landscape designers, homeowners, artists--anyone needing professional construction information edited down to the essentials-- I highly recommend this book!

Outstanding selection of photos defining numerous material selections and their designed use.
Paramount to the process is Peter's description of the planning and design process. Easy to follow, thorough, and it leads the amature and professional through the inital idea(s) to a well defined project - bricks and mortar.
The step by step direction tool(s), material(s) and know how should result in a successful project for friends and family to enjoy and rave about. Just look at the pictures. HUNGER!!!
A wonderful book for young and old, amature and professional.

Practical Pole Building Construction: With Plans for Barns, Cabins, & Outbuildings Review

Practical Pole Building Construction: With Plans for Barns, Cabins, and Outbuildings
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Of all the pole building books I have seen, this is the best. Seddon covers the logic of pole building and then gives straightforward instruction on how to do it, with lots of clear drawings and photographs. Included are design, materials, calculating loads, foundations, framing and jointry, roofing and siding, windows and doors, building plans, and an appendix that shows how to calculate sun angles, snow loads, compares insulations, gives recommended nailing schedules, and several other useful items. Plans include a lake house, hillside house, cabin, garage, horse stable, and lean-to animal shelter. If you have never built anything before, it is likely that you will be able to build any or all of these with no more instruction than this book, plus plumbing and electrical help.

Treehouses & Playhouses You Can Build Review

Treehouses and Playhouses You Can Build
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the latest installment in a long string of wonderful books from David and Jeanie Stiles. Inside you won't find glossy, double page spreads of extravagant treehouses ... this is not a coffee table book. Rather, it is a how-to book, and the best one available for those that want to build their own whimsical play structure. Inside you will find excellent line drawings and readable explanations of intelligent, creative, and well though-out designs.
David starts with the basics: tools. From there you follow a complete and logical progression to completed treehouse. In between you'll get solid building advice. David has built his designs. He knows how to make life easier for you by using common materials and minimizing cuts. The building advice is spot on throughout.
The huge, huge, huge problem with this book is the 20 or so options David gives you for connecting lumber to tree. They are almost all bad. Never girdle a growing limb with rope or cable. Never use nails. This leaves you with only lag bolting. To be sure, there are other ways. But the only safe and tree-friendly way presented in this book (and any of his other works) is to use lags.
This is the by far the best book to give to a young builder and is probably a treasure to any 8 or 9 year old lucky enough to have a copy. It will get their mind working. The crazy schemes they come up with will amaze you.
The ideas inside this book are great. Fun, imaginative, unique. If you know a young boy (or girl) with a tree, get him this book. And when it comes time to actually build their creation, call an arborist and he'll set you straight about properly attaching it to a tree.

For the rest of us, there's bit of elbow grease, a lot of imagination, a trip to the hardware store-and Treehouses & Playhouses You Can Build.

Authors David and Jeanie Stiles are the best-selling authors of a number of books on treehouses with sales of over 150,000 copies. Form and Forces: Designing Efficient, Expressive Structures Review

Form and Forces: Designing Efficient, Expressive Structures
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is amazing and all structural engineers and architects, students included, should have this on their bookshelves. But more importantly than having it in your library is actually plunging into it and learning from it because if you learn these techniques they will completely transform the way you think about structural form and forces. I have been using this book in my classes, one class is taught to architecture students and the other to structural engineering students. The results have been astounding, the architecture students are empowered by the form finding tool of graphic statics and the engineers are thrilled by the beauty and logic of the force finding process. Both groups of students came up with dozens of elegant and efficient structures by linking the forces to the forms, and that is what I mean by "life changing". I find myself totally enthralled by this method and the power it unleashes. I have a PhD in structural engineering and I am a registered engineer in California and I have never been so excited about a technique as I am with this one. The book is clearly written, down to the level of having figures and text match up on the page so you don't have to flip pages to refer to a figure. Some exercises are straightforward, so much so that I taught them to 6th graders as an outreach exercise. Other sections are deeply connected to higher order theories and merit study from my graduate students. Many references are made to the giants of our profession who have used these techniques to design graceful and efficient structures. Yet the book manages to be all these things in a precise and clear manner. The authors really want you to understand each step thoroughly and they give you the tools needed to really understand important ideas about structural form.

Here, in one volume, is all the architect needs to know to participate in the entire process of designing structures. Emphasizing bestselling author Edward Allen's graphical approach, the book enables you to quickly determine the desired form of a building or other structure and easily design it without the need for complex mathematics. This unique text teaches the whole process of structural design for architects, including selection of suitable materials, finding a suitable configuration, finding forces and size members, designing appropriate connections, and proposing a feasible method of erection. Chapters are centered on the design of a whole structure, from conception through construction planning.

Millions of homes are situated along the shores of rivers, lakes and other bodies of water, and a large number of these have (or very much need) a dock. Some docks serve as boat landings, others as fishing piers, still others as platforms for recreational swimming and sunning, and some as places for relaxed entertaining decks over water. Building & Maintaining Docks is a guide book for planning, designing, building, and maintaining any type of dock, both for primary residences and vacation homes. Heavily illustrated with color photography, and featuring the latest technologies in dock construction and building materials, this book will both inspire and educate.

The Architect's Studio Companion: Rules of Thumb for Preliminary Design Review

The Architect's Studio Companion: Rules of Thumb for Preliminary Design
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is designed to help architects in their design of new buildings. Spedifically, the book is organized about the common building codes in place around the United States. The intent of the book is to minimize the time that an architect need spend on checking building codes themselves so that he can proceed to working on the design of the building.
The book establishes a simple system of seven steps to help the architect in his initial design effort.
The first step is to determine the Building Code and occupancy, then check as to what types of construction are permitted by the code, move on to a preliminary structural design, consider using daylighting, plan for mechanical and electrical systems, determine building code requirements for egress and accessibility, and finally parking.
By having all this informaion at your fingertips a great deal of time can be saved.

Graphic Guide to Frame Construction (For Pros By Pros)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is my favorite resource for, well, frame construction. I've used it for as a reference for doing detail drawings and as a reference for doing actual construction. I'm adding on to my house, doing most of the work myself. Whenever I hit a snag or need to do something I only vaguely know how to do (which is more often than I'd like), this is the first book I turn to. The drawings are of excellent quality, the text is extremely clear, and the layout like a fine set of blueprints. Its indexed well enough that you can find what you need quickly. The spiral binding is perfect for taking it to the job site and letting it stay open on the page you need.
I'd highly recommend this book to apprentice carpenters, general contractors, architectural students, architects, and do-it-yourselfers.
Thallon's Graphic Guide to Interior Details makes a nice compliment to this book, though I don't find it as necessary.
